The Law of Attraction

by speaker and author, Colette Carlson, MA

The Law of Attraction, practiced for centuries in many circles, has become popular due to the best-selling book and movie, The Secret. The principles behind the Law of Attraction state that you will draw to yourself situations that reflect your most dominant thoughts and beliefs. Unfortunately, too many individuals interpret the Law to mean they can simply “think” their way to success and ignore a key principle -- taking action.

Ironically, the word action resides within Attraction and is a necessary step to getting what you want. Thoughts take form in action, and in turn, action influences thought.

For example, you can sit around all day long thinking about how much you deserve a promotion, seeing yourself in the new position, telling your friends you deserve to be promoted, but until you sign up for a class to gain a required skill, have a direct conversation with your supervisor, or take the time to apply for the position it’s not going to happen. Attraction requires action.

The easiest way to get started is to start! Not 5 minutes from now, 5 weeks from now or 5 months from now, but right now. What can you do right now to bring you more of what you want?

For example, let’s say you want more challenging assignments at work. Grab a pad of paper and spend the next couple of minutes writing down what tasks you would be interested in performing. Then use the next sheet of paper and write down why you know you’ll succeed at performing those particular tasks. This is your buy-in that delivers the courage, confidence and conviction you need to take action. At the top of a third sheet, write, “What action can I take right now to move me closer to performing these tasks?” Write down the first thing that pops in your mind and schedule a time to do it. Immediately is best.

Daily, pull out your pad of paper, re-read your desires, your buy-in, celebrate yesterday’s action, and then write down your next action step. Remember, baby steps are fine. Don’t make it complicated, just do something! To learn more about a particular task, perhaps you need to call another assistant, get on your supervisor’s calendar or interview a colleague. Not sure what to say? Be clear and keep it real. “In order to stay challenged and focused, I’m interested in (blank). What would you suggest I do to make this happen?”

Motion changes thoughts and emotions, and by continuing to take daily action, you are proving to yourself and others your commitment to this goal, in addition to building the esteem to keep going. This consistent, focused energy creates the magnetic opportunities you desire. Want to attract more of what you want? Get down to business, and take action today!
